Getting Started

⚠️ IMPORTANT — Please Read Before You Start

This app saves your data to this browser on this device only. This means:

  • If you switch to a different device (e.g. phone vs laptop), your data will not be there
  • If you switch browsers on the same computer (e.g. Chrome to Safari), your data will not be there
  • If you clear your browser data or cache, your data will be erased

✅ Solution: Always use the Export Data button to save a backup file after every session. This is your safety net.

Welcome to your Emergency Planning App — the most important document your family will never need to use, but will be incredibly grateful you prepared.

🔖 Step 1 — Bookmark this page right now

Press Ctrl+D (Windows) or Cmd+D (Mac) to bookmark this page in your browser. This is important — your data is tied to this browser, so always return to your binder using this bookmark.

⚠️ Always open your binder from this bookmark in the same browser. Opening it in a different browser or device will show a blank binder.

Step 2 — Work through each section using the left-hand navigation. You don't have to complete it all at once.

Step 3 — Watch the Dashboard to track your progress. Aim for 100%!

Step 4 — At the end of every session, click Export Data in the top bar to save a backup file. Store it in Google Drive or iCloud. This is your safety net if anything ever happens to your browser data.

Step 5 — When complete, click Print / Save PDF in the top right to save or print a clean copy for your records.

Step 6 — Share access with a trusted family member using the Share section.

Step 7 — Set a calendar reminder to review your binder every January.

💾 How Your Data is Saved

Your data saves automatically as you type. You'll see "Saved ✓" appear in the top bar. You don't need to click anything.

⚠️ Important: Your data is saved to this browser on this computer only. If you open the binder in a different browser (e.g. Chrome vs Safari) or on a different computer, your data won't be there — unless you use the Export/Import feature below.

⬇ Export Data — Create a Backup

Click Export Data in the top bar to download a small .json backup file to your computer. This file contains everything you've entered.

Save this file to Google Drive, iCloud, or a USB drive for safekeeping. It's your insurance policy against losing your work.

⬆ Import Data — Restore from Backup

Click Import Data in the top bar and select your saved .json file. Your binder will instantly restore everything exactly as you left it.

Use this when switching to a new computer, a different browser, or restoring after clearing your browser data.

💡 Our recommendation: Export a backup every time you finish a session. Name it something like emergency-binder-backup-2025.json and keep it in Google Drive alongside a printed PDF copy.

👨‍👩‍👧 Sharing With a Family Member

⚠️ Read this before sharing your binder file

Each person's data is saved to their own browser only. If you send the HTML file to a family member and they open it, it will be empty — they will NOT see your information. This is by design to keep your data private.

To share your completed binder with a family member:

  1. You fill in your binder completely
  2. You click Export Data → a .json backup file downloads
  3. You send that .json file to your family member (email, Google Drive, AirDrop, etc.)
  4. They open their copy of the HTML binder file
  5. They click Import Data → select your .json file → done! They now see everything you entered.

💡 Tip: Whenever you update your binder, export a fresh .json and send the new file to your family member so they always have the latest version.

Keeping It Safe

🔒 Sections marked with 🔒 contain sensitive information (banking, passwords, medical). Keep this binder in a secure location — not somewhere anyone can access.

☁️ Cloud backup: Export your data and save the backup file + a printed PDF to Google Drive, iCloud, or another secure cloud service so it's accessible from anywhere.

🤝 Trusted person: Make sure at least one trusted person knows where to find this binder or has been given access.
